Anamorphic

A widescreen picture that is written in such a way that it uses a greater vertical resolution than a standard letterbox transfer, offering up to a third more lines of picture information. This results in a much sharper picture on television sets that can support it. However, the down-conversion from an anamorphic picture onto a non-anamorphic display source can sometimes introduce artefacts - although this depends on the hardware used.
